The SEC Tournament

The winner gets the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.  Basketball has always been a tournament game.  The SEC provides you another chance to go to the NCAA if you are a winner.  Being ready physically is important, rested, improved. excited about a new opportunity and eager to play instead of being glad that the season is coming to a close.  But a huge factor in the SEC tournament is how you are as a team mentality.  Can you be ready to beat a team that you have already beaten once or twice?  That is being mentality ready.

As coaches, I talked about a new season, championship is there for us to take.  You might add a wrinkle or two to your offence knowing that you had been scouted to death.  This was generally done a couple of weeks before the tournament.  Conveying to our team that we are going to be different than the other 11 schools.  During our practice time the day before the tournament, we are going to scrimage for 30 minutes while the other teams are going to have a shoot around.  Our preparation is different because we added new wringles our opponent had not seen.

You have to beat the teams that you are supposed to beat regardless of what has happened in your past games and in some way be prepared to beat the teams that are as good or better than you.  I always tried to arrive at the SEC tournament as late as possible because if you are successful, it is a long week.  We were able to get in the finals of the SEC tournament 9 out of 12 years and that was because of some very good players and a great staff.

Saccharin must be the most fattening thing in the world everytime I look  up a fat person is using it.

I asked Sonny if he was being considerate of Jan.  He said sure.  He  holds the door open for her when she staggers in with a load of groceries.

He said he didn't make the garden any bigger because she tires easily.
Have a nice week!!  Wimp

In light of the TCU problems and the problelms I had in my coaching days, the public which is pretty naive needs to understand what coaches are involved in.

In this day and age, in most kids minds smoking marijuana is like drinking a beer.  With these ideas, we now have real problems that lead to advanced problems.

People that support their particular teams seem to always think that is the team that they are playing that has the problem no theirs.

I hope we all understand that it is not the YMCA or churches' responsibility to raise their kids but the responsibility is with the home and the parents.

One of these days, I hope to sit down and explain to the media exactly how all of this comes down but probably not best to do that  on this forum.

Let me just say in closing, all of the coaches in all sports have a very a tough time doing what they think is best to maintain discipline.  My hat is off to all of them.

Thanks, Wimp

Alabama - Auburn basketball

Why did it turn out with Alabama the big winner?

In the first half Auburn's zone did not do what it was trying to do.
1. That was to keep the ball out of the middle.
2. Alabama dribbled pentrated through it, threw skit passes and then inside to the block area.  They also had good presence in the high post.
3.  Auburn tries to play way way too fast for the ball handlers that they have.  They shoot it too quick at times and many times bad shots.
4.  The game was lost in the first half when Auburn was hurt by Alabama pressure defense.  Auburn is not good on the inside and they struggle passing the ball out of the post area.
5.  Both teams played hard as you would expect. I thought Auburn trying to go man to man and slow the offence down in the beginning of the second half was good.
6.  Remember if teams zone you, you don't have to always shoot outside to be effective.  Alabama got the ball inside and also hit some good outside shots at critical times.

Alabama has better players and did a very good job with them.  Auburn played hard and they need a couple of years of good recruiting.

Wednesday is the signing date which for many  is more important than Christmas or their birthday.

Recruiting is difficult, far more difficult than the average fan realizes.  So much time is spent forming relationships with coaches, parents, friends and anyone you think might help that young man make his decision.  Remember the relationship on just one player may be formulated years before he makes his decision.  Most of you think football recruiting is tough.  But I promise you that as difficult as it is, there was nothing more difficult than basketball recruiting.  Why?  You can't cover up your mistakes with numbers.  Sign 25 and you might get by on making a mistake on 2 or 3 each year.  Sign 6 like basketball and miss on 2 or 3 two years in a row, you are out of the basketball business.

Remember in just about every case, there is a key that opens the door.  Your job is to find it, get it and use it.  Oh, I know it is easier to recruit football players to football schools and basketball players to so called basketball schools but the coaches doing the recruiting don't look at it that way.  They are all determined to work as hard as possible to get that kid in their program.

I can't give all of the reasons that a kid makes a decision about a school and it won't always be in this order.  Here are some important reasons:  1.  a chance to play now as a freshman in other words playing time 2.  type of offense or defense 3. the relationship with the assistant coach and his feelings about the head coach from he and his parents 4. having a chance to go to the NFL or the NBA based on pass players 5. playing at a home state university 6. in many cases acadamics plays a major role 7. facilities are becoming more and more important and there many more that I'm not going to name.

Remember 4 years from now many won't remember who had the best recruiting class in 2012.  They will be happy or complaining as to how their team is doing.  It is a fascinating , demanding, frustating business and oh so nerve wracking.  I did it 37 of my 38 years, 20 as an assistant.  The tales get bigger and the stories funnier, especially if you got the kid!
